Choosing a private school
What to look for when choosing a private school
In Colchester and the surrounding areas, you will find a variety of private schools and it is worth having an idea of some of the differences between different establishments, and what we can offer you at Littlegarth.
Independent nursery & primary school in Essex
Littlegarth is a School for primary age children; this includes both Infants and Juniors, or Key Stages 1 and 2, and also has a Nursery for children from two years of age.
Our EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) encompasses children in Nursery and Reception; Key Stage 1 is called Pre-Prep, and includes Years 1 and 2, whilst Key Stage 2 is called Prep and is for children in Years 3-6.
Children leave Littlegarth at the end of Year 6 (the end of Key Stage 2) for a secondary school of their choice. We are a completely independent primary school, which means that we are not tied into any senior schools, but can genuinely offer you support and advice tailored to your child in finding the best senior school for them. We are invested in knowing who each child is and recommending senior schools to fit their individual natures, skills and interests. It is one of our strengths that we are truly independent, and not attached to any one senior school.
Littlegarth is also a charity with the purpose of educating children up to the age of eleven. Being a charity means that fees that parents pay are used for the purpose of the charity, and are therefore reinvested into the school for the benefit of the education of the children. Littlegarth has a Board of Governors who are trustees of the charity; Littlegarth is not proprietor owned, or part of a large chain of commercial businesses.
We look forward to meeting you and sharing our wonderful school.
