Children from Little Explorers have French lessons with specialist teachers. To start with, their teacher visits them in their classroom, enthusing them with songs, rhymes, phrases and practical learning – they might be trying to find the parrot in a Nursery lesson, or going on the Eurostar to France in Reception!
By Year 4, children have lessons in the specialist languages room and become more frequent visitors as they begin to learn German in Year 5, Spanish in Year 6 and Latin in both year groups. Children leave Littlegarth with a well-developed knowledge of a European language, with the knowledge of two others, to help them decide on their future language goals, and to show them the links to other languages that they may wish to learn too.
We celebrate languages that children speak at home, encouraging them to share in school and particularly as part of our ‘World of Languages’ annual assembly.
